Lyme disease cases in England have surged by over 20% in a year, according to recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This alarming trend has sparked renewed interest in the development of new vaccines and drugs to combat the tick-borne illness. The rise in cases, from 959 in 2024 to 1,168 in 2025, mirrors the previous year's figure, indicating a persistent challenge in managing this disease.
Dr. Claire Gordon, head of the rare and imported pathogens laboratory at UKHSA, attributes the increase to various factors. She notes that the geographical distribution of ticks is expanding, influenced by weather changes, climate trends, habitat shifts, and host population dynamics. The symptoms of Lyme disease, including a distinctive bullseye rash, fever, muscle and joint pain, and lethargy, can be insidious and may go unnoticed, further complicating diagnosis and treatment.
The battle against Lyme disease is multifaceted. While rapid tick removal is crucial to reducing the risk of infection, the development of vaccines and drugs for humans has been a complex endeavor. One significant challenge is the differing approaches between veterinary and human medicine. Linden Hu, a professor of immunology, explains that conducting clinical trials in humans is more challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the environment and the unpredictable occurrence of Lyme cases.
The story of LYMErix, a vaccine once available in the US, is a cautionary tale. Despite showing promise in trials with an efficacy of 76%, it was withdrawn from the market in 2002 due to poor uptake. The vaccine's recommendation was limited to high-risk individuals, and concerns about potential links to arthritis further dampened public interest. The negative media coverage and lack of trust in the vaccine played a significant role in its low demand.
However, there is hope on the horizon. Several new treatments are in the pipeline, including an mRNA vaccine from Moderna and a vaccine from Pfizer and Valneva. These approaches aim to avoid the immune pathway suspected of causing arthritis in some LYMErix recipients. While the Pfizer/Valneva vaccine faced challenges in its phase 3 trial, with fewer-than-expected Lyme cases, it still demonstrated an efficacy of over 70%.
Additionally, innovative drugs like lotilaner from Tarsus Pharmaceuticals offer a unique approach. Unlike vaccines, this drug kills ticks before they can transmit Lyme disease, providing a rapid and effective defense.
