Isle of Man Introduces English-Style Food Hygiene Ratings: What You Need to Know (2026)

The Isle of Man is set to introduce an English-style food hygiene rating system, mirroring the well-established model in England and Wales. This move, announced by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA), aims to provide customers with clear information about food hygiene standards when dining out. The scheme will cover over 300 cafés, restaurants, takeaways, and pubs, with inspections conducted from early 2027 and results published online as they are completed. This initiative follows a U-turn by DEFA Minister Clare Barber, who initially deemed such a scheme impractical and potentially unfair to businesses due to a shortage of qualified food hygiene inspectors. Instead, a food safety assurance programme was introduced, focusing on education and workshops for operators. However, the new rating system is now set to proceed, offering a zero-to-five rating, similar to the one in England and Wales. This system will assess food handling, premises cleanliness, and management systems, providing customers with valuable insights into the hygiene standards of their chosen eateries. The phased approach ensures businesses have adequate time and support, with presentations, one-to-one advice, and workshops scheduled to help them prepare for inspections. The first session is set for August 6 in Douglas, with further dates in September. This development is a significant step towards enhancing food safety and consumer confidence on the Isle of Man, addressing the lack of transparency in food hygiene standards currently faced by customers.
