New Jersey's Trail: A Welcome Relief
As Russell and I ventured across the Delaware River, we couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It was as if we had entered a different world, one that offered a much-needed respite from the challenges we had faced on the trail so far.
The Keystone State's Farewell
The past week in Pennsylvania had been brutal. Extreme heat, poor air quality, and relentless storms had taken a toll on our spirits and our feet. We bid farewell to the Keystone State with a mix of emotions - grateful for the warm hospitality of its people, yet eager to leave the harsh conditions behind.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Stepping into New Jersey felt like a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively. The weather transformed into a calm, cool beauty, with temperatures hovering around a perfect 75-78 degrees. The threat of dehydration lifted, and we no longer had to carry heavy water loads. It was as if the state itself was welcoming us with open arms, offering a much-needed mercy after the miles of misery.
First Impressions: A Mellow Trail
The Delaware Water Gap, a popular day hiking destination, presented us with a well-maintained and easy path. It was a welcome change from the bludgeoning rocks and rugged terrain of Pennsylvania. The gentle incline and gravel path led us to Sunfish Lake, surrounded by a gorgeous fern forest. New Jersey's natural beauty surprised me; I had expected an urban landscape, but instead, we found ourselves amidst green, distant views and panoramic ridge lines.
A Restful Night's Sleep
The cooler weather brought a much-needed change to our sleep patterns. No more sweaty, fitful naps; instead, we looked forward to a restful night's sleep, a luxury we hadn't experienced in weeks. The trail in New Jersey was a far cry from the extreme conditions we had endured, and we were grateful for the opportunity to ease back into our hiking rhythm.
The Health of Forests and Vistas
One thing that stood out to me was the health of New Jersey's forests. The trail offered a mix of rocky terrain and soft pine segments, providing a soothing change for our weary feet. The vistas were breathtaking, and I couldn't help but marvel at the quality of the views. New Jersey, often overlooked, should be celebrated as a relief for hikers, offering a much-needed break from the rigors of the trail.
Deli Blazing and Good Company
As we continued our journey, we entered "deli blazing" territory, where restaurants dotted the trail, offering a much-needed boost to our spirits and a strain on our wallets. Fully satiated, we pushed on, meeting up with old friends along the way. It was a wonderful reminder that the trail community is always there, even when you think your pace might prevent you from seeing them again.
A Hopeful Streak
Our first truly good day in weeks left us hopeful. The trail in New Jersey had offered us a chance to recharge, both physically and mentally. We retired to our tents that night, dreaming of a streak of good days ahead. New Jersey, with its beautiful landscapes and welcoming atmosphere, had given us a new lease on our hiking journey.
